If you have a blog and don't have Google Adsense, you might as well throw away some moolah!

Google Adsense is easy, convenient, fun, and simple to use. You do not have to be an expert in html coding or any other special web skill. If you know how to copy and paste, you can use Google Adsense for your blog and start earning money from the Google ads and search engine abilities.

Before signing up for Google Adsense for your blog make sure you read through their rules and policies. Some are very important as they can get you kicked off, such as clicking on your own Google ads to try to earn money. That's considered cheating.

First, go the the Google Adsense homepage and sign up. Just click where it says click here to apply! Submit all of the information necessary. Afterwards you should receive a confirmation email, which will have your username and given password in the email body. Click on the link to authorize and activate your account with Google Adsense.

Now you will want to have two windows open - one with you logged into Google Adsense and the other with your blog(s). Blogger is easier (I'm not sure about other blog hosts), because you can go to the layout section in your Blogger, click on ad a section, and then click on the ad Adsense to your blog. Just use your username and password for Google Adsense and Blogger will add the ads and search engines for you. You just tell Blogger where to put them!

Make sure you log into your account to fill in your tax information as required, or you will not get paid accordingly. You can choose to get your earnings directly deposited into your bank account or to get a check in the mail.

You will also notice an email from Google Adsense asking if it is okay for Blogger to have access to your account. Just say okay so your ads can be displayed on your blogs!

You should start seeing some revenues soon! You can place them on all of your blogs and websites!

Making Sense Of Google AdSense

AdSense is one of the most common ways for bloggers to earn from the blog - but should YOU use it? Or the variation of the question I receive on regular bases - “why don’t you use AdSense on your blog?”

Answer to this one simple and complex at same time and perhaps by providing it here I will save myself some time answering it and help you determine if you should use AdSense on your blog…

What Is Right For You?

And by that question I mean - what is Most Desired Action on your blog?

Answer the question above for yourself and you will be one step closer to deciding if AdSense should be used on your blog or not. Because I’m not advocating NOT to use - I’m simply trying to say here that AdSense or any other text ads are not right for every blog…

• If you simply blog for fun or share information you know much about and have no other “alternative motive” then perhaps you should start implementing those ads ASAP.
• …but if you are using your blog to share your knowledge AND in process establish your right to share it (some call it authority) with a goal to sell some information product in directly related field then using AdSense will cause you to loose your visitors and perhaps shouldn’t be used.

Follow The Money!

I’ll be straight up here and make a statement you simply MUST know. Not every niche is created equal and what you right about is directly responsible on what type of ads it will pull from Google. As we all know clicks on those ads is what generates the income for you and while some ads can bring you several bucks, others will only give you a few cents, while still driving your visitor AWAY FROM YOUR BLOG…

You have worked hard to create content, you promoted your blog, you put your heart and your time to bring your visitors to your blog - are you willing to loose them in exchange for a few cents?

This is the second question you should answer for yourself. Determine how much do you actually get per click and is it worth to loose the visitors to gain this questionable income?

My own blog’s content is within a niche that brings next to nothing in terms of per-click income and I much rather keep the visitors reading my blog, establish relationship and possibly turn them into customers then have them click away from my blog. But you have to make that determination for your own blog…

If clicks on your blog worth enough to justify the placement of ads - don’t think twice and have them installed.

But either way don’t forget the simple principal…

Don’t Put All Your Eggs In One Basket!

And by that I simply mean don’t rely on AdSense as a source of income. Diversify your income options:

• Use affiliate marketing on your blog and it doesn’t even have to be glorified sales letters… remember, people read your blog because they like what you have to say, people value your opinion and sharing your honest take on a product directly related to your conversation topic will be interesting to your readers. Many will act, others will ignore but either way you don’t loose anything. Implementing ClickBank affiliate links is very simple and I have covered it already here.
• Implement CPA ads. This one is overlooked by many and yet it can be extremely profitable for right audience. Some CPA ads can bring as much as $20 per lead you send their way or even more. It does need to be directly related to your niche to be effective.
• Add Amazon affiliate tools to your blog. Using the trust that Amazon managed to establish on internet you can earn without annoying your visitors. What’s even better the granddaddy of Affiliate Marketing continues to increase options you have for income on autopilot. So if you don’t use them yet - have a second look at what’s in store… I covered one of the options in this post.
• Implement banner ads. Sell some of your blog real estate once you get some traffic and take advantage of banner ads come back.

Now these are not by any means all-inclusive list and never intended to be but it provides you with options to earn from your blog without breaking TOS of AdSense. And it doesn’t really matter if you use AdSense or not - I still recommend you have a look at affiliate marketing as an addition or even replacement for AdSense. In my case it is far more profitable then using text ads and that is one of the reasons why I don’t implement them.

AdSense Keyword Research

Google AdSense ads are contextual text-based ads that depend very much on the content of the page they are displayed on.
Obviously AdSense looks at several different thing to place the page at its correct location in the taxonomy so relevant ads can be selected and shown.
And consequently there isn't just one thing that can be changed to get AdSense to pick different ads.
One could argue that because it's such a complex algorithm that determines the theme of the page it doesn't really make sense to talk about keyword research and optimization in the usual sense.

There are basically two different reasons why you would want to do keyword research and change your pages.

1. To get rid of irrelevant ads, so you don't waste ad space on ads that almost certainly get 0 clicks because they are far away from what the visitor search for and expect to find.
2. To show higher paid ads, so you earn more per click.

So is Google AdSense keyword research something that should be treated differently from regular keyword optimization work? Yes it should.

A page serving AdSense ads must serve a dual purpose.

1. It must attract enough search engine visitors by focusing on keywords with high demand but little competition. This is the way keywords are normally selected when you want the pages to generate traffic without having to put all your resources into tweaking and tuning the page.
2. It must attract high paying AdSense ads to maximize the revenue generated.

Let's say you have a page about "keyword optimization".
Through regular keyword research you have decided that "keyword optimization" should be your primary key-phrase.

Google show a favorably low number (4,760) of competing pages for "keyword optimization"

But a quick look at http://uv.bidtool.overture.com/d/search/tools/bidtool/ reveals that the maximum bid for "keyword optimization" is only $0.76
I know that there isn't a 100% correlation between bids for Overture keywords and for Google AdWords, but it's good enough to demonstrate why you can't rely on ordinary or traditional keyword research when it comes to maximizing Google AdSense income.
So what we are after now are additional keywords that are related so they can we woven into the content of the page - and help force AdSense to pick higher paying ads to show on your page.

"search engine ranking" would be such a phrase.

Google knows of 193,000 pages competing for the phrase "search engine ranking", so it's highly unlikely that you should be able to rank high for that phrase.
So traditional keyword research wisdom would say that it shouldn't be targeted, but when it comes to AdSense you have to think differently about this second keyword.

A quick look into the Overture View Bids tool show us that the maximum bid is $4.21

So the price an advertiser is willing to pay for clicks to the "search engine ranking" keyphrase is five and a half times more than the maximum bid for "keyword optimizatio".
So besides targeting "keyword optimizatio" to get targeted traffic to your page, you should also target "search engine ranking" to increase the likelihood that Google's AdSense will pick a higher paying advertizer.
